Understand the claim before comparing installers

The Renewable Energy Consumer Code concerns consumer-facing standards. Check current membership directly; it is a separate question from technical installation certification.

Check the company that will carry out the work

Look up the company using RECC’s member information and read its consumer guidance before agreeing a quotation. Establish the exact legal business taking payment and whether that is the business whose membership you checked.

A company website may contain an old badge, and a similarly named business may be a different legal entity. If the official source and company information disagree, ask the scheme operator or business to clarify before treating the claim as current. We do not independently certify directory entries.

Agree the scope and paperwork

Compare written equipment specifications, performance assumptions, payment stages and aftercare. Ask how any deposit or workmanship protection applies to your contract and obtain the actual documents rather than assuming every payment is covered.

Tell the contractor whether you need a new installation, a battery retrofit or repairs to an existing system. Ask about recent experience with your equipment and property type, postcode coverage and who responds to problems after handover. A company's credentials alone do not tell you whether it accepts your particular job.

Compare companies using the same brief

Give shortlisted companies the same address, requirements and existing-system information. Request exact equipment models, a survey scope, installed price, exclusions and separate product and workmanship warranty terms. Check the assumptions behind output or savings estimates and ask for changes to the agreed scope in writing.
