Plan independent power for a home, cabin or remote site. Compare installers, winter design and the full cost of your system.
One starting point. Different requirements.
An off-grid solar system supplies a property without relying on a mains electricity connection. The useful question is not simply how many panels fit: it is what you need to power, when you need it and how the system handles a shortfall.
Start with everyday demand, heating and cooking choices, and the appliances that must keep running. Request a winter operating plan, not just an annual generation estimate.
Explain when the building is occupied. A summer weekend cabin and a winter holiday let need different reserves, monitoring and arrangements between visits.
List pumps, refrigeration, tools and other starting loads. Tell the designer about operating hours, cable distances, access and any existing generator.
Panels, storage and controls need to work together. This is a planning overview, not a wiring diagram; actual equipment and connections depend on the design.
Location, shading and seasonal output determine the energy available.
Usable capacity and the agreed reserve determine what can be saved for later.
Compatible equipment manages charging and supplies the required power.
Daily energy use and simultaneous peak loads shape the whole design.
Ask separately about an alternative supply, such as a compatible generator, and what happens when stored energy runs low. The right arrangement depends on your site and reliability needs.
Ask the installer to show the expected output during the least productive months, the usable battery reserve and the assumptions about occupancy. Several low-generation days matter more to an independent supply than a strong annual total.
Agree which loads are essential, what can be turned off and when another supply would be needed. Heating, hot water and vehicle charging should be discussed explicitly rather than assumed to fit within a standard package.
For an existing grid-connected home, a solar battery installation may be the relevant starting point. Emergency backup and permanent off-grid operation are different requirements: ask exactly which circuits can run during an outage and for how long.
There is no reliable single price for everything from a small cabin to a year-round home. We do not yet have enough comparable, checked off-grid quotations to publish a typical installed cost. Equipment-only kit prices are not directly comparable with a surveyed, installed and commissioned system.
| Cost driver | Ask the installer to specify |
|---|---|
| Energy & power needs | The daily energy demand, peak loads and seasonal usage the price is designed around. |
| Panels & mounting | Array size, roof or ground mounting, access, shading assumptions and site works. |
| Storage & controls | Usable battery capacity, inverter output, monitoring, reserve settings and equipment models. |
| Alternative supply | Whether generator integration, controls and commissioning are included, and likely running costs. |
| Installation & aftercare | Labour, cabling, testing, handover, VAT, exclusions, warranty terms and future servicing. |
Compare like-for-like specifications. Where a grid connection is an option, ask for a separate connection estimate and compare it with the off-grid system’s installation, fuel, maintenance and replacement costs.
Include the UK postcode, building type, months occupied, appliance list and approximate hours of use. Add any existing panels, battery or generator, roof or land availability, access restrictions and preferred timing. Ask for examples of similar completed work and confirm postcode coverage before booking a survey.

Do not assume so. Ask for a complete design for your loads, winter generation, usable storage and alternative supply. A grid-connected battery or emergency backup feature is not by itself a permanently independent system.
There is no useful single figure for every property. The design depends on daily energy demand, peak loads, occupancy, seasonal generation, reserve requirements and available alternative supply. Ask for those assumptions in writing.
Confirm the exact application directly. An off-grid category may cover different projects, from small equipment to occupied properties; ask for comparable recent work and postcode coverage.
Ask the designer to explain the lowest-generation periods, poor-weather reserve and alternative supply. Do not treat an annual production estimate as a guarantee of uninterrupted winter power.
The cost depends on energy demand, usable storage, peak power, site works and alternative supply. We do not yet have enough comparable checked quotations to publish a typical installed price. Ask for an itemised quote including design, equipment, installation, commissioning, VAT and aftercare; a kit price may exclude several of these.
No. Check whether a kit includes design, suitable protection and controls, mounting, cabling, installation and commissioning. Confirm that the equipment suits your actual loads and site. Do not assume a package described as complete includes every part of an installed system.
Browse the location links below, then confirm that each company handles your type of off-grid project and serves your postcode. A nearby office does not establish specialist experience. You can also send a UK project enquiry so our team can try to identify local or nationwide companies.
Common design questions include insufficient generation in winter, greater electricity demand than planned, high simultaneous loads and inadequate usable storage. Ask your installer to explain low-energy operation, monitoring, maintenance and the alternative supply plan before installation.
