Understand what an IET reference means

The Institution of Engineering and Technology is a professional organisation. An IET membership reference is not, on its own, certification of a solar installation business. Ask the company exactly what it is claiming: whose membership or professional status is involved, whether it is current and how it relates to the proposed work. Check the IET membership information rather than treating a logo as proof of installation approval.

Check the business as well as the individual

A quotation may come from a business employing a member, from a subcontractor or from a sales company using an installation partner. Establish which legal business contracts with you, which team performs the work and who provides aftercare. An individual’s professional affiliation does not answer all of those questions. Request the relevant company and technology-specific credentials separately and verify them using the appropriate official source.

Compare the practical installation scope

For solar PV, ask for the system specification, survey assumptions, access arrangements, electrical work and commissioning documents. For batteries, include compatibility, usable storage, power limits and any backup requirement. For repairs, confirm support for your equipment and the diagnostic charge. A membership reference does not establish current postcode coverage or willingness to take on your particular project.

Keep the evidence with the quotation

Ask for written clarification of credentials and the roles of any other businesses involved. Keep the final scope, equipment list, exclusions and warranty terms with the quotation. The records below carry an existing IET category and need current checks; they are not an independently verified membership list.
