Start with a clear description of the fault
Tell the repair company what changed and when. Useful information includes the inverter make and model, a visible fault code, monitoring screenshots, the installation date and whether output stopped completely or fell gradually. Share commissioning documents and previous repair records if you have them. A remote monitoring problem, generation problem and battery problem may require different investigations.
Avoid drawing a conclusion from one cloudy day or a single app reading. Ask the company what information it needs to distinguish a reporting issue from a system fault. Do not climb onto the roof, open electrical equipment or disconnect cables to investigate. If equipment appears damaged or unsafe, keep clear and seek qualified assistance.
When the original installer is unavailable
Ask prospective contractors explicitly whether they work on systems installed by another business. Provide the original specification and warranty documents, but explain if some records are missing. A company may support some brands or system types and decline others. Confirm whether the first visit is diagnostic only and whether parts sourcing or manufacturer support could require another visit.
Product warranties and the original installer’s workmanship cover are different. Ask the manufacturer or warranty provider about the relevant claim route before assuming a new contractor’s labour is covered. Keep a written record of findings, parts fitted and changes made to the installation for future support.
Compare repair quotations fairly
What to compare in a solar repair quote| Part of the quote | What to establish |
|---|
| Diagnosis and travel | Call-out charge, travel area, checks included and whether you pay if no repair is authorised. |
|---|
| Labour and parts | Specified work, equipment models, parts availability and charges for additional visits. |
|---|
| Roof access | Whether scaffold, lifting equipment or a separate roofing contractor is required and included. |
|---|
| Handover | Test results, commissioning, monitoring access, documentation and disposal of replaced equipment. |
|---|
| Total and warranty | VAT, exclusions, quotation validity, payment terms and separate parts and workmanship cover. |

Maintenance, cleaning and roof work are different jobs
Ask what a maintenance visit actually includes: inspection, performance review, fault diagnosis or a defined service schedule. Panel cleaning is a separate scope and should follow appropriate equipment and access requirements. Read our solar panel cleaning guide before booking it as a solution to an unexplained output problem.
If roof repairs require the array to be moved, request panel removal and reinstallation explicitly. Agree responsibility for isolation, storage, roof work, refitting, testing and recommissioning. A general maintenance offer does not automatically include those stages.
Commercial solar operations and maintenance
For commercial arrays, provide the system size, site access rules, monitoring arrangements and operating constraints. Ask the company which inspection, reporting and response services it provides, what the contract excludes and how remedial work is priced. Clarify responsibility for monitoring alerts and raising faults. Compare a defined service agreement with another defined agreement, rather than a one-off visit with an ongoing contract. Our commercial solar O&M guide provides a detailed contract comparison brief.

Questions to ask before booking
Can a company repair a system it did not install?
Solar and Wind Applications explicitly says it can repair PV systems installed by others. Other companies may have restrictions: ask about your equipment model, installation age and available documentation.
Does an inverter fault always require replacement?
Ask a qualified service provider to diagnose the fault and explain repair and replacement options. Do not open an inverter or attempt electrical repairs yourself.
How do I find solar inverter repairs near me?
Check that the company serves your postcode, diagnoses your inverter model and accepts systems installed by other businesses. A nearby office is not proof of coverage; confirm the travel charge and visit availability before booking.
Does panel cleaning fix low solar output?
Not necessarily. Ask a contractor to assess the likely cause before paying for cleaning as a remedy. Monitoring, equipment faults, shading and surface contamination require different responses.
Can I arrange commercial solar maintenance?
Ask for a service scope matched to your array, monitoring and site requirements. Confirm inspections, reporting, fault response, exclusions and the cost of remedial work separately.
What should a repair quotation include?
Ask for the diagnostic or call-out charge, labour, parts, VAT, access costs, proposed work and warranty. Confirm whether a diagnostic visit is chargeable even if you decline the repair.
